What is a Scrappy quilt?
My approach is that it is a quilt with multiple fabrics. It could have almost any colour and or type of fabric, it could be very controlled so it looks like the fabrics are co-ordinated, or it could be anything in between these two ideas. It is a matter of personal taste.
Part of the intention of the club is to help students discover what they like in the quilts they see, so they can make quilts that appeal to them.
What is the club all about?
Students meet once per month to learn, and sew for the day (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
students sign up for a 3 month session
students can sign up any time and don’t have to have attended to the session(s) prior
the focus is to have fun while learning
students need a general knowledge of quiltmaking, but individual attention is given to all students whether they are fairly new to quilting or experienced
What do they learn?
it is a scrappy approach to quilting
tips ,demos, and techniques for various methods of sewing piecing suitable for any quiltmaking, not just scrappy quilts
demos on tools that could be used (e.g., rulers)
ideas for organizing & storing fabrics
ideas for settings, sashings, borders, & bindings that could be used on any quilt
ideas for using pre-cuts (e.g., charm packs, jelly rolls, etc.)
ideas on what to do with panels and fussy cuts
ideas on what you could buy to make your scraps work more effectively
resources available (e.g., books, software, internet, etc.)
several patterns are given each session with many options
some options are suitable for the more experienced quilter who wants to challenge themselves, but most patterns are easy to sew
NOTES are included in the class
show and tell from students and myself each class for more ideas to share
Do students have to make the projects?
students are free to work on whatever they want to - there is no pressure to start a new project if they don’t want to
some students make a sample of the technique block for reference then work on a UFO in class
some students make one or more of the projects.
Scrappy Club starts again in January 2021
